Artist: Nguyen Khai
2013,  34” x 28” x 7”, Mixed Media on Wood Board.

The artwork is signed and ready to hang with hardware.

Nguyen Khai was born in Hue, Vietnam in 1949. He graduated from the NationalSchool of Fine Arts in 1963. He is one of the founders of the prestigious Association of Young Vietnamese Artists and won the Bronze medal at a Spring Art Exhibition in Saigon even before his graduation.  In1981, after six years of the communist regime, Nguyen Khai and his family resettled in California where he was able to regain his artistic freedom.

Nguyen Khai is known for his creativity, imagery, and strong use of color. He delves deep into his cultural past and new Western experience for inspiration. His oil paintings evoke romantic interludes, nostalgic yearnings, and sensuous beauty.  Khai’s talent extends to include non-traditional art such as abstract, mixed media, and stone carvings.  Nguyen Khai has created a series of mixed media designed to explore the effects of technology on human life and spirituality which

 he named “Mankind and Computers.”

About Artwork from the artist’s Note

Ever since I arrived in America, the rapid development and advancement of the computer have astonished me. Although this new era of technology and scientific innovations brings much excitement and change, we must not let it overwhelm our sense of balance.  In my new set of mixed media paintings, Mankind & Computers, I want to express the importance of balance between science and humanistic spirituality. In my paintings, I want to convey a sense of beauty and color that is achieved when there is harmony. The paintings  are in a sense, a reminder to people that we created computers and not vice versa. Technology should work equally side by side with people to promote creativity and artistry but not to hinder it. We control our lives with a strong immaterial power that no computer can ever replace.

-Nguyen Khai-

“Sophisticated and complex, Khai’s works converse with an array of visual phenomena ranging from ancient Asian court art, with its perfected symbols of suns, moons, and the seasons, to contemporary images of machine gears, computer parts, and time clocks. Heralding the comings of a new millennium these works reconsider the socio-cultural values of the late twentieth-century life, revering the wisdom of the past while striding with the technological milieu of the present.”
